Working for us

Have you thought about working in the public sector?

Our colleagues Claire and Cheryl are just two of the many colleagues who come to join us every year from the private sector. They explain in their own words what attracted them to join the public sector and the challenging and high profile work they do.

"I joined the GCO in 2015 after 20 years in commercial roles in the private sector in financial services, construction and manufacturing industries. I was attracted to the public sector due to its sheer size and scale of the contracts that it had but more so the opportunity to make a difference to public services. As a working mum, I have also been really pleased how I have been able to take on senior roles but also balance that with family and home life. There are great benefits of working in the GCO, not least the support with coaching and mentoring, networking with colleagues in different departments up and down the country.

I have had a number of roles since joining the GCO, working in the Department for Work and Pensions and then moving to Education last year. I am currently a commercial director in the Department for Education, looking after the core department procurement with around £10bn of contracts and grants to be procured and managed across schools, social care and the Departments core operations. We have recently undergone a huge transformation of the function, bringing in over 130 commercial professionals. Government is certainly challenging to work in but incredibly exciting and a real opportunity to make a difference."
